I think you are going to have to get a bit more detailed than that. What happens when they are both soldiers? What about having a spouse and an ex-spouse? How about children that are soldiers?

I know you would like them to have only one spouse, but that's not the real world.

How about parent table and dependant table?

Parent defined as soldier or not
Parent defined as male/female
Parent status as married,single,divorced
Parent has pointer to spouse in same table

Dependant has pointer to parent 1 and parent 2 (or could just point to soldier)
If you don't point to both parents in parent table from dependant, you could have problem knowing who the dependant belongs to (you know soldier, but may be ex-spouse).
