>>After playing around with OpenFile() I found that you're right and it does work, at least under Windows 95. However, if I recall correctly, Nigel is running NT 4, so I can't speak to that case.

>>There's another factor to consider. Since it's stated that OpenFile() is provided for backward compatibility with 16 bit Windows, there's no guarantee that it will still be around in Win 98. I suspect that it might be, but since I don't have the new documentation yet, I can't say for certain. However, I think it would be prudent, given the possibilities, to use CreateFile() instead, even if it is more difficult. Once it's working, it takes the possibility of there being a future problem. Well...at least until 64 bit Windows. :-)

>You are right, of course, about being an obsolete function that may disappear in future versions. I asked only because Nigel said that "OpenFile() returns the wrong type of file handle." and I couldn't understand why is this handle of wrong type.

That's why I mentioned that he was working under NT 4. Some functions that are supposed to exist don't or don't work properly. Nigel, I'm curiious now too.
