ODBC is Open DataBase Connectivity
and it is a mean MS devised that lets you connect to all kinds of DB engines (in the exteme case u can even use a simple text file as a DB source with an ODBC driver)

SQL Server has (as other DBs) ODBC drivers wich enables other tools
e.g. VFP,VB, Delphi etc. to connect to it
