I appreciate your comment, I forgot the logicals and discovered that one exists in the tables. I fixed that, but still had the problem.

Then I discovered it was actually caused by another source: Because of the nature of this app I rely heavily on SCATTER MEMVAR and GATHER MEMVAR. A couple of the table memvars happened to have the same name as forms that I'm using. It was the form names that were returning .NULL. when they were out of scope. So I've learned to be more careful about possible conflicts in memory variables, and that was the problem all along.
