I wanted to say that your links were very helpful. One of them said that the DVD drive CD might have a DVD Decoder software. Sure enough, I found deep into the EXTRA folder of the DVD a copy of PowerDVD. And PowerDVD is recommended by Msft to be use on XP. So it is win, win. I installed it and now can watch my DVDs at work <g>.
