You're right. This topic has been examined several times in SF.

I wish I could remember titles............

Robert Heinlein, in one of his worst (least very good?) books wrote about a USA which had been conquored by "Oreintals." A beam weapon was developed which would target only "Orientals."

Recently Ben Bova had a series (topic is Industrial Warfare in the Asteroid Belt) in which "nanobots" typically used for industrial processes but also capable of working inside the human body could be used to enhance the human immune system. They were also capable of being programmed as weapons.

I'm sure there are others out there.
