A customer sent me a CD with two files, SQL Server database backup. The file names are:
MYCOMPDATA.MDF
MYCOMPDATA_LOG.LDF

I need to install this data into my SQL Server. Here is what I did:

1. First I created a database in my SQL Server of name "MYCOMPDATA" (I thought this was required, that is, you have to have a database before you can restore it).
2. I select from Tools, Restore database.
3. Click on From Devide (whereas Database is initially selected and I change it to Device)
4. I click on Select Devices
5. Then Restore from Disk, click on Add, navigate to the folder with file MYCOMPDATA.MDF.

At the end I get error:
The file on device 'C:\MYCOMPDATA.MDF' is not a valid Microsoft Tape format backup.
Any suggestion to what I am doing wrong?

Thank you.
