You are sadly mistaken if you think this only happens with the current party in the White House. The same tactics were used when Clinton was in office. I don't remember if this was prevalent in the first Bush White House or even prior to that. Both sides politically assassinate the character of their detractors and "enemies". It ain't going to change either until a viable third party rises from the dung-heap.
