For me the cost of the desktop is almost the same as cost of laptop
Price of LCD + computer = Price of desktop
You can get USB divices like USB HDD(4-120GB/$100-150) or USB flash drive(64mb-4GB/$10-300)
So everything depend what is comfortable for you
