>Um, yeah, I could go buy a new laptop for $2500 (plus a docking station). Or I could go buy a new desktop for $1000. And in three years, I can go do the same thing again. (Or I could buy a laptop on EBay for less, but I can also buy a desktop on ebay for less.)

I understand your point. Keep in mind the P25 (which needs no docking station) well keep you from having to buy a desktop - so basicly you get the desktop + the laptop for the $2500....or at least that's what I used to convince myself to blow that much money..hahahaha.

>I'm not convinced the extra cost of the laptop is worth the money. But I'm not willing to give up the flexibility the laptop provides. I'm looking for a third option.

Hence the 'desktop replacement' laptop concept.

>My thought was to have an external harddrive. All of my development, data, my Outlook postoffice, etc. would live on the external. VFP is installed on the desktop and the laptop. I'd do most of my work on a new desktop connected to the external. When needed, I'd take my old laptop and the external drive to use when I had to go to a client.

I've done this exact thing - I've even gone a step further and not even taken the laptop and just taken the external hard-drive in situations where I was just installing updates to exe's and table structures and knew I'd have access to their network when I got there. I had a major-junker laptop up until about this time last year that I lugged around with me and then a couple of decent desktops at home to use. Only real issue I had was the time it took to keep everything 'in sync'.
