I talked to Calvin Hsia after one of his sessions at Devcon in Vegas. I was trying to figure out the same thing... I asked him if a bindevents would work for this scenario. He thought it would work using a parameter of zero, but it will require having version 9.0 as it will need to be able to respond to windows events. A parameter of zero will respond to any windows 'window' being opened. If nothing else, you could place another window of your own above the old 'Running Query' message. If I end up with a working sample of code in 9, i will let you know.
Thanks,

Stacy
