I was in a similar position back in May - needing to re-write an app and thinking I wanted a free framework due to not having much spare cash to spend on a commercial one. I downloaded the Codebook framework and spent two months trying to make it work for my app. I spent more time debugging the framework then writing the app. In August I gave up and spent the bucks on Mere Mortals. That had a few hurdles to get over, but the project is just about finished. I still spent way too much time stepping through framework code trying to figure out why things weren't working as expected, but there is more community support here than in the Codebook forums, and for the most part, the framework parts work as expected.
I decided on Mere Mortals as, after spending two months learning Codebook, it seemed that the time spent doing so might be somewhat transferable to MM. To an extent, it was.
