In my FP 2.6 days (it was about half of year ago ;), I used to do what you want by creating screen for add/edit data where records was added ONLY after validation by business logic (silly me, I used to bury it in UI objects like push button). By this way you'll be able to create any complicated add/edit scenarios. Really, I used one screen for editing/adding (just passed the parameter that indicates the mode) It worked and works just fine...
