AFAIR working on cursors and DE's is handled in J. Booth's Effective Techniques and in KiloFox (Akins, Kramek & Schummer). You get the code as well if you buy the book, and your task should be finished in no time. I think Kilofox is closer for your problem, if you have to pick. Don't reinvent the wheel...
