Uhm, FTP tends to actually be more efficient than HTTP because FTP can restart and sends a raw stream where HTTP can do all sorts of funky connection management things. If performance or size is your concern then HTTP is only going to make your issue worse. If FTP is available I recommend you use it.

HTTP is a great choice if you need to do something in response to something being sent to the server immediately.

We do have tools that provide both FTP and HTTP (as well as SMTP/POP3 Email) and a host of other client side IP features in our West Wind Internet Protocols suite:

There are also a few free and less consolidated libraries in the libs here that may work for you if your needs are simple.
