Ok, here is what we could try now and see if that would be better.
For all those forums that are not expanding, the ones that are only read on an occasional basis, their content will keep appearing as new messages as long as the forum title is not expanded. So, the count of new messages will be represented as if the forum content was never pulled and it will be reseted (minus the new messages of that forum) once a click is done on the forum title to expand the branch. This applies so far on the forum title only. If the expand is done with the + sign, it will have no effect right now as this hasn't been done yet.
Here is a scenario:
1. I have VFP as not expand in Forums definition
2. Lets say I have 23 new messages (5 VFP, 18 Chatter)
3. I click on Refresh
4. I get VFP branch collapsed and Chatter branch expanded
5. The count is now reseted to 5 as VFP messages are not taken among the stats
6. I close UT and come back to see that I still have 5 new messages (this is what we want)
7. As I entered back UT, I see the map of messages representing VFP branch collapsed
8. I click on VFP title
9. It expands the branch
10. The count is reseted to 0
