Michel ... shouldn't the new message number be for the forums that have "Enable for reading new messages" set and not have anything to do with whether they auto-expand or not?

The way this is now mostly used is that a member usually have at least one forum that auto expand at startup. So, the other forums are only used occasionnaly and collapsed at startup. So, the count of new messages would rely only on the expand forum new messages.
