My dad was with the US Fourth Marines in Shanghai, and then with the First Division. In Shanghai dad took many hundreds of pictures (being a photo bug runs in the family). Dad took pictures of things you would not want to see or hear about. The Japanese and Chinese would shoot at the Marines for fun.

The part of the First Division dad was with during the early days of WWII spend some time in Bermuda. That sounds rather exotic!

There was a movie made in the early 1960’s with David Jannsen about the battle of Okinawa. I read a book written about two years about the battle. You could never make a movie about the true battle! It was the worse battle of WWII.
