I would think that when the refresh is done, you know which messages are being brought down and it would be only those messages that should be marked "read" (or however you mark them). Ok, I thought you wanted to have a flag back in time up to several refreshes but no reset on a specific set of new messages which kept growing between refreshes.

In this case, yes, there is a good way to make sure that a reset is done from the timestamp of the refresh and not the timestamp of the actual time.
