I went through my folder options and the configuration is set to
- show hidden files and
- not hide file extensions of known file types
Now when I did a search of all files ending in ".pif" it continued to list FOXRUN in 3 places but again did not show the extensions.
But these are .pif files because your advice about right click on the files, click Properties etc. works. (This seems to be the only type of file extension that does not display.)
So I think this is a foible of the Windows 2000 Explorer. I have had some other problems with the Windows 2000 Explorer which I have taken up with MS and they have ackowledged they have problems.
Anyway, I am able to follow your advice now, so thanks for helping me with this.
