I assume you are using only your account, right? Because, if you tried from a co-worker's account, it could be that those settings are different. Also, you may precise which numbers exactly are you looking for. There are counts of new messages that appear at the bottom of the map of messages, optionally at the top. There are counts that optionnaly appear next to each forum title. There are counts that appear next to each category title when the map of new messages goes dynamic. You may also post your Universal Thread questions directly into the Chatter, Universal Thread Related Topics category. I found this one when doing some tests and could have not seen it as it was not directed to me.
