Instead of clicking on a match, use shift-click. This will open the item in a new window. Then, you can easily go back to the previous window.

In Opera, which is a very superior browser (compared with IE), you can also press Ctrl-Shift-Click. This will open the item in a new window, without bringing the new window to the front. This allows you to quickly select several items.
