These five years I've lived in central virginia, last 15 months on the coast. Weather is very mild - there's about six snow days per winter. Lots of forest, and also very humid. Usual weather in the summer is 90/90 (Fahrenheit/relative humidity) or higher. Coast is actually less humid; inland gets all the humidity which then stops by the Appalachies and can't get out.

As others have told you, as soon as you move at least 30 miles south of DC, it's getting cheaper. Virginia Beach and Richmond are cheaper a lot than the north, despite the former being a tourist resort and the latter the state capital.
