How many religions have an attempt of building a monopoly in their first sentence? All that I know of, except maybe Buddhism. Pretty much any monotheistic religion claims that they are right and everyone else is at least partially, if not completely wrong. And they all have an expressed intent to spread.

So yes, Islam is trying to spread by use of force. They've doing quite well, given that they have started in VII century. They are only a century or two late - so they've made up for about four.

But then, other religions have abandoned their forceful methods only recently, at least en masse. There are still other ways, they haven't given up their attempts. It's just that their methods have changed.
