Oracle being a RDBMS has all support for backup and restore utility, you can take datafiles / tablespaces offline and can take a complete backup.
Oracle can ensure its all-time availability even though you take tablespace offline.
Frequency of backup is also a very important issue and can be planned through schedulers and scripts.
Backup using export is not the ideal way but can certainly work good depending upon the database you maintain and the cruciality it holds.
