>Ahh. I didn't understand you were taling about the Google (and others) search on top right. That one opens in current tab for me too. What I do is use an unimportant tab (one I've read) to be replaced by Google results. Then every Google link I open in a new tab keeping the results page open.

Install extension I mentioned and there will be checkbox in the Tabbrowser preferences to open search in the new tab.
