I've read most of the replies to now.

I don't know how you can be so sure that there is not a flaky network connection somewhere, since you say it keeps coming up intermittently.

Maybe someone just added a little coffee-maker to their desk and is causing local brown-out. Maybe the plug for such a device is crossing the network cable, causing interference.

If it's because it's running on a standalone PC, then I can think of 2 things:
1) bad spot on the HD (or HD going bad)
2) the HD may have write cache enabled, which in my experience can lead to a variety of oddities, randomly.
