I just spent a couple of hours trying to understand TreeView, and found that I'll get the number when the index can be interpreted as a number. I had to force a non-numeric "_" character into every key (yes, I finally have it all working). If your keys are random, or based upon machine name, this could be the cause.
I'm appending from a cursor into TreeView, and I found it helpful to browse the cursor for suspicious values when I got such messages during testing.
