I have the Application_Error method implemented in one of my ASP.NET applcations to handle unhandled global errors and it works fine. We are working on a new application in which I am implementing the same method, but when I test it by entering some illegal script text, instead of firing the Global.asax method ASP.NET displays the generic ASP.NET error page.

The Web.config pages directive has been set as validateRequest="true".
The customErrors mode has been tried with mode="On" and mode="RemoteOnly", same results.

What "duh" thing am I missing here?
