For what its worth the Big Bang doesn't answer your question in any clear way either. It says all the matter was stuck together as some super time-less, space-less particle (Terry mentioned the "egg") and then it started to expand.
Here's a bit of irony for you. The big bang was the idea of a priest who wanted the origin of the Universe to be consistent with genesis:
