Correct me if I'm wrong Mike. The fore-mentioned Website you posted above seem to suggest that in the early earth's primodial soup, RNA some how was able to do double duty. That is, it could be play the role of both catalyst and reproductive roles. If so, they're making a huge assumption. But if true, the nucleic acids back then weren't your average acids.

Ok. Here are the facts I know from my days at the great Texas A&M University.
In all cells known to man:
1) Proteins are catalysts or (should it be catalyst are proteins...)
2) DNA/RNA (Nucleic Acids) are storage/retrieval and reproduction agents.
3) Proteins are polymers of amino acids
4) Nucleic acids are polymers of nucleotides
5) Nucleotides themselves are a combination of a sugar (deoxyribose for DNA, ribose for RNA), a nitrogenous base and a phosphate group.
6) DNA itself codes for the proteins
7) To do 6, DNA requires at least 3 or 4 dozens of different proteins to do it's thing, the necessary decoding, and still more proteins for replication functions.

Just basic biochemistry so far.

The genetic code is biologically meaningless/useless unless it is translated; that is, unless it leads to the synthesis of the proteins whose structure is laid down by the code. But the machinery/mechanism by which the cell translates the code consists of at least few dozen macromolecular components which are themselves coded in the DNA. Thus the code can not be translated except by using certain products of its own translation.

So both the DNA and proteins must have been functional from the beginning in order for evolution to start, otherwise life could not exist because one can't exist without the other.

This is the old chicken and the egg routine. DNA/RNA must have it required catalysts (protein) to function, but there can't eb any protein if DNA is not functioning.... A vicious cycle....
