It was near the end of the school day for me, 5th grade. I can remember we were in the process of putting our chairs up on our desks, getting ready to go home, when the announcement came over the PA (Public Address) system. I remember total silence in the room at first. No one could believe it.

When I got home, my mother was in tears, glued to the TV set. She stayed that way (in tears and glued to the TV) for many, many days after. My 10th birthday was two days later, but I never had a birthday party that year.
