>It seems that every generation has its "Where were you when......" moment. For my parents it was Pearl Harbor. For my generation it was Kennedy. For my children it was the Challenger. For all of us it is 9/11.

The Challenger exploded the day my grandfather was buried. I was about 6 months pregnant with my second son, and my husband, first son and I had gone to Disney World for a last vacation before the new baby. My grandfather had surgery the day we traveled and didn't make. I left my husband and son in Orlando to go to Washington for the funeral. I learned of the explosion on the ride from the synagogue to the cemetary.
My husband and son were on the skyride in the Magic Kingdom when they saw a bright streak go across the sky. It wasn't until later in the day that they found out what it was. Our son (then 3) was already fascinated by the space program and afterward, always felt a special connection to Challenger.
FWIW, he's now a first-year grad student studying theoretical physics, after double-majoring in Physics and Astronomy.
As for 9/11, like much of the Fox community, I was in San Diego at DevCon. I woke up, turned on the Today show to catch the news while I got dressed, and was shocked by the video.
