That had pretty much ended by the time I left the military. However, it was that way also when I was in the Army. When I was in Germany I had to pull that duty myself twice. In Germany it took twice as long because you could exchange currency at the same time. There was an officer who handed out the pay and two enlisted guards... Everyone hated that duty because if you were lucky your company gave you payday activities so you were off after getting paid except for those that had to hand out the pay of course...
