Evolution.

A species that had mothers and fathers with no interest in their families well being would be eliminated by natural selection. The species that had interest in the well being of thier offspring, and society (schools of fish, packs of wolves, ect.) would leave more offspring behind and thus be the "fittest."

You should read about evolution. I recommend Richard Dawkin's "The Selfish Gene."
