Before Christ, it was actually through faith that people received salvation, just as it is taught in the New Testament (and today). This was expressed specifically in Gen 15:6 and Hab 2:4. This is explained in detail in Romans chapter 4. The ceremonial sacrifices introduced by the Mosaic law were a mere shadow of what Jesus' sacrifice fulfilled (as explained in Hebrews). The ancient sacrifices were meant to point to Christ.
