VSS does not use SQL Server to store things, if that's what you're asking.
There are issues with VSS database corruption when it gets too many files.
There are competing SCC tools and Microsoft is making updates to VSS with Visual Studio 2005 and introducing a new high-end product called Team System. If you have to use VSS, I recommend you get the book "Essential Sourcesafe" by Ted Roche, available from
www.hentzenwerke.com.
