>>Rather a personal question, and I'll understand if you don't want to reply, but I read an article once that stated that Keith Reid's father was arrested during Kristallnacht in Vienna when many were sent to Dachau (I visited Dachau in 1984 and will never forget it) but was able to flee to England with his brother. He and his brother were raised in Judaism in England and it made him uncomfortable during his school years. Is your father's name Michael?

I'd guess that wasn't unusual, especially back then.
My England-born mother with school traning there in French came to Canada (Montreal) but moved to a small Quebec town soon after (father got a job transfer). She ventured into the grocery store and asked for a pound of carrots, in her best (English) French. The guy looked at her quizzically and asked her to repeat and then burst out laughing. She never spoke a word of French after that... her French pronounciation of 'carrots' was a colloquialism for 'turds'.
