I am sure they did not have what they have now. When I was in Athletics in Junior High and HS from about 1972 to 1979, the only thing found in our locker room were those gosh-awful salt tablets. We did not even know about steroids (at least in our school). The "scandals" back then, and somewhat "documented" in the movie North Dallas Forty were pain killers either injected or taken orally. The other drugs abused back then were anything but performance enhancing. The pain killers only served to allow you to play through injuries and pain and did not enhance performance above what you had already attained. There also was not near the amount pressure or the $$$ back then experienced by athletes of today, so the incentive to "cheat" was just not there.
