If you are only a quarter of a mile away, consider either a fractional T1 or frame relay connection. It operates as just one large pipe with a hub at each end that dumps to the workstations on one side and the server on the other. All 5 workstations share the pipe. Depending upon the level of concurrent data traffic your speeds should be acceptable for processing. Look into Cisco's or Motorola's frame relay modems.
