None of the localmachine variations ( localhost, (localhost), local, (local), etc. ) work. If there is a switch switched somewhere I don't know what it is but would sure like to. Is your SQL installation installed as the "default" install? I seem to remember having this problem, but can't remember the resolution. But, I think it was because SQL 7.0 was on the machine, so SQL 2000 installed as NOT the default server even though it turned off SQL 7.0.
