there was a problem in w95 that if you had too much memory on the machine it would crash, 98 had something similar. I presume that office probably has the same bug or something similiar. its a while since i hit it but as far as i know the limit was less that 512mb in 95 (95 initially even had problems with hard drives over 2 or 4gb) and anything over 256 in 98 was inefectual as it couldn't use it.
