IÄld say real hardware problems are not at the base of this.
I am quite certain that you don't have flakey LAN cards/ports in both, and the only real hardware/setup related problems came from having token ring in the loop.

The problem rises only on my PC and on another one, which is a Travelmate 290, on other PC even with the same operating system it gives no problems.

Protocols the same ? NetBEUI was fastest in ancient days, nowadays it is something of a security risk and not as fast as it used to be. Start coverage, sniff your net and trace fileaccesses via sysinternal tools. Not a pleasant thought to start the new year with<g>, but if it is that big a difference you'll catch it.
