Ugh, that's really dated <g>... Surplus actually ran in excess of 4 million backend hits a day on 2 dual processor Pentium Pro (<g>) machines back in 1996. Hardware obviously has made those numbers pale...
Still, I don't know of any other really large sites on that scale (although there are a few that are running over 500 hundred thousand hits a day), but I know of a couple companies that have done load testing of their apps into close to 10 million hits a day on single quad box.
The Surplus site at the time was a Microsoft case study and I wrote up some of the design and layout issues in two articles:
http://www.west-wind.com/presentations/LargeWeb/For Load Balancing there's additional information in the Web Connection documentation and here:
http://www.west-wind.com/presentations/loadbalancing/NetworkLoadBalancingWindows2003.aspwhich I've used in several applications.
Michel, you should ask this on the West Wind message board where people using the product actually hang out - you'll get more live feedback there most likely.

What kind of server infrastructure was in place? How many servers are used? How many database hits per second. I am interested in knowing what kind of application and services were provided on that Web site.

Web Connection has been field tested on a number of high volume sites. Web Connection has been run at over 900,000+ requests per day at www.surplusauction.com and not even close to maxing out. This busy site is one of the top commercial sites on the Internet.
