A quid is a pound just as a buck is a dollar. Like "bob" it has no plural, hence "ten quid". You can say "it only cost a quid" but never "one quid". I've heard cockneys referring to it as a "Sov" (presumably short for a "sovereign", which is an old term for a pound coin, especially gold)
