"Aren't beyond suspition" is a nice understatement; it is well-known that military dictatorships all over Latin America (some 20 or 30 years ago) were set up by the United States. Just search for the "Plan Cóndor" for details.

The details were learned much later; what is currently going on is, well, subject of speculation for now.
