The "Digital Millennium Copyright Act" is a US law that make any product that overrides (forgot the legal term) an "encrypted" copyrighted product illegal. The courts have already ruled that a product will some "legal" usage can be considered illegal. The 321 Studio case is a perfect example – they made software to copy DVDs to allow home owners to back-up the DVD. Making back-ups is legal under copyright treaties but the U.S. courts ruled that the software was defeating a encrypted process while making a legal copy the DVD. And thus was illegal.
