Wow - let me see how I do on this explanation (there may be some English majors who can come up with a better one). A metaphor is usually a comparison of one situation to another using an allegory or parable (or story) to make the point. In this case when I said 'I'm beating a dead horse' I meant that there have been a lot of questions asked already about comboboxes and here I go again asking another one (that's the beating the dead horse part). In every language there are these common stories that if you refer to them in a certain situation, everyone knows what you're talking about. That's how I'd describe a metaphor.
