We have apps written in Delphi and VFP. I prefer VFP for heavy data munching but Delphi is much better for cases where a smaller footprint is required. Delphi has great tools for working with data too and much better web tools than VFP. IMHO it is a user preference as to which is better between Delphi and VFP.
We use Delphi DLLS for communications in all of our apps. Delphi manages that much better than VFP.
