At Bata/Bolivia, I used Perforce (
www.perforce.com) successfully. It is free for 1-2 developers, but for larger teams, it costs a little more than VSS.
Other, completely free, options, seem to exist - but I didn't test them. I think the most well-known one is called CVS.
